“Manga can be roughly translated as "graphic
novels", in reality it is a much more complex subject. Manga can include
almost every subject imaginable from funny stories to serious literature.
Technical manuals and even legal case histories have been released in manga format.” (Koyagi)
The origin of manga comes from a Japanese tradition of narrating a story. Telling a story has been
a culture of Japanese since the 12th centuries and the
narrative picture scroll, Chōjū-giga (鳥獣戯画), also known
as Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga
(鳥獣人物戯画) from
the 12th century depicts animals acting like people, (Isao). This picture has the same drawing techniques as the manga we
know today, that are drawn using simple and some imaginary lines, in addition
to its way of reading from top left to bottom right.
Today manga is one of the most well known graphic
novels that have many fans. Its unique characteristics such as easy reading and
making “addictive” are the things that make the readers enjoy reading manga. A manga series may become popular enough that it is made into an anime (アニメ) - Japanese styled animation which also boost its popularity.
